Ardal O'Hanlon honoured with James Joyce Award

Irish comedian, actor and author Ardal O’Hanlon has been presented with the James Joyce Award by (opens in a new window)UCD’s Literary and Historical (L&H) Society, recognising his outstanding contribution to the arts and Irish cultural life.
Celebrating a career spanning more than three decades across television, film, stand-up comedy and literature, the award is considered one of the highest honours bestowed by a student society in Ireland.
O’Hanlon is widely known for his iconic role as Fr Dougal McGuire in Father Ted, as well as his acclaimed work as a novelist and stand-up performer.
Regarded as one of Ireland’s most enduring and respected comedic figures, the Carrickmacross native has enjoyed a successful acting career in comedy and drama, with numerous appearances across British and Irish television.
"The L&H were delighted to honour Ardal O’Hanlon with the James Joyce Award in recognition of his contribution to the arts, comedy, and Irish cultural life,” said society auditor Noah Mullen Clarke.
“From his iconic role as Fr Dougal in Father Ted to his acclaimed work on stage, screen, and as a novelist, his wit and warmth have made a lasting impact. It was a pleasure to celebrate his achievements and welcome him to the university."
The James Joyce Award is given by the L&H Society to public figures who have achieved outstanding success and made a significant contribution to cultural and public life.
It is named after James Joyce, UCD’s most distinguished alumni and author of Ulysses, Dubliners, and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, who was an active member of the Society during his time at the university.
Previously recipients include leading figures from across the worlds of politics, literature, sport and entertainment.
Among its awardees are Nobel Laureate Seamus Heaney, actor Will Ferrell, singer Emeli Sandé, filmmaker Danny Boyle, and skateboarder Tony Hawk.
