Update Your Duo Mobile App and Explore New Second-Factor Option

Wednesday, 4 March, 2026

Duo Mobile Application update required before March 31, 2026

Duo Multifactor Authentication (MFA) What’s Happening?

The vendor behind the Duo Mobile app has announced that versions older than 4.85.0 will no longer be supported due to an expiring certificate.

What do I need to do?

Check your version: Open the Duo Mobile app on your phone or smart device, tap the menu (☰ three lines), and look at the bottom of the screen. If the version number shown begins 4.85 or higher, you are already on a compatible version of the application. (4.107 is the latest)

Update if Needed: Open the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play Store (Android), search for "Duo Mobile" if you see an "Update" button, tap it.

What if I do not update the Duo Mobile app by March 31 2026?

If you continue to use an old version of the Duo Mobile App you will no longer receive Duo Push notifications when logging into University resources e.g. Gmail, Brightspace, InfoHub etc. From March 31 2026, users no longer receiving Duo Push Notifications will not be able to login. Note you can switch or continue to use passcodes generated in an older version of the Duo Mobile App to complete your second factor authentication.

What if my phone can’t update?

If your smart device is too old to support the latest version, you can switch to using passcodes generated in the Duo Mobile App or start using the new second factor option, the Duo Desktop App on your computer (link).

Important notes:

  • Smart Devices running an (opens in a new window)unsupported mobile operating system or devices that do not automatically update the Duo Mobile app will lose Duo Push notifications after March 31, 2026.
  • Users can continue to use the Duo Mobile App to generate passcodes for two-factor authentication.
  • Duo Mobile versions released since April 2025 already include the new certificate bundle.
  • Users who have disabled automatic updates or attempt to use an older version of Duo Mobile may experience MFA failures starting in spring 2026.

Launch of New Duo Second Factor Option

To offset potential issues with older versions of the Duo Mobile App we are launching an additional way to complete second factor authentication. From March 5 2026 all users will be able to use Duo Desktop on their computer as a second factor.
